Autopilot does not smoke by itself, but it can prepare the whole scene

The short version: you do not need a dramatic backstory to examine a nightly routine. Start with the ten minutes before the joint and change one part of the scene: arriving home, finishing work, sitting on the sofa or going to bed.

I smoke joints every night, but I still work during the day

Working, caring for other people and keeping your commitments do not make an unwanted routine irrelevant. The question is not whether you fit a label. It is whether you can decide before the scene takes over, and what happens when you try not to smoke that night.

The scene happens before the joint

Look at the previous ten minutes. Maybe you closed the laptop, argued with someone, opened a beer or sat on the couch. The trigger may be an external, body or a sentence: “I deserve it,” “only one” or “today has been a rare day.”

Make the sequence visible

For a few days, note only four things: the time, the place, what you were feeling and what happened next. You do not need to explain your childhood. You are looking for a repeated sequence that lets you intervene earlier.

Change one hinge

Choose one small point: after work, put the materials out of sight and go outside for ten minutes; eat before sitting down; or complete a preselected action when “just one” appears. The change does not have to solve your entire relationship with cannabis. It only has to put a decision back into the sequence.

Self-awareness without surveillance

Observing yourself does not mean analysing yourself all day. A brief note and a weekly review tend to teach more than a constant score. If you smoke, the information still helps: it may show where the plan arrived too late or was too complicated.

Four common forms of autopilot

  • Closure: Smoking makes the job end.
  • Award: Any tough day looks worthy.
  • Setting: the sofa, music or video games activate the gesture.
  • Social: somebody lights up and your earlier decision disappears.

Naming an automatic pattern does not turn it into a diagnosis. It simply helps you choose a different hinge for each scene.

What to do if the pattern appears

If you haven’t started yet, prepare those scenes at Day 0. If the joint appears at bed, prepare the guide for sleep without smoking. If you’re already on pause, use a short delay and change the environment. If you end up smoking, check the guide about What to do if you get back to smoking. The map serves to learn, not to declare that you are a person without will.
