Or you may want a break to understand its place in your life. Either way, it helps to prepare for the next difficult moment: when it usually happens and what you’ll do when it comes.

A short plan: choose a date soon, prepare for the three moments when you usually smoke, put the material out of reach and decide what you will do during the first evening. You do not have to work out the rest of your life today.

If you already know what concerns you most, go straight to sleeping without weed, stopping or cutting back, joints mixed with tobacco or what to do if you smoke again.

Start with a small and clear decision

Choose a date soon. Today, tomorrow or the day after is usually more manageable than waiting for the perfect Monday — which tends to arrive late. Define what you are trying too: for example, 21 days without weed within a month of support. It’s not a guarantee that you’ll stop for good. It’s a trial with a beginning and an end, so you can observe your relationship with weed and decide how to continue.

Prepare the scenes, not just the intentions

Think of no more than three moments: finishing work, sitting on the sofa, trying to sleep, meeting people who smoke or opening a beer. Prepare one simple response for each scene. It might be eating before you sit down, going outside for ten minutes, changing rooms or messaging someone you trust.

Make a concrete decision about your smoking material and what you have left, too. Do not leave that negotiation open for later.

During the day: one action, not a list of chores

When the urge appears, do not try to solve your whole life. Change the physical context first: stand up, drink water, go outside or give your hands something to do. Then ask what was happening just beforehand. Hunger, tiredness, boredom, anxiety and habit may need different responses.

If you smoke again, you don’t lose what you’ve learned

Look at what happened without turning it into a verdict. Where were you? What thought gave you permission? What would have helped ten minutes earlier? The next useful decision matters more than declaring everything lost. If you are concerned about your use, how you feel or a loss of control, seek healthcare or specialist support.

Questions to consider before you start

Is it better to stop at once or cut back gradually?

There is no universal answer. A break means not smoking for a set time, but you can still feel urges or find yourself debating whether to smoke. Cutting back requires limits decided before you use. The dedicated guide compares taking a break and reducing gradually.

Do I have to throw everything away?

There is no required ritual, but leaving cannabis, papers, a grinder and an ashtray within reach keeps open a decision you wanted to close before the evening. Choose an arrangement you can maintain without negotiating with the material later.

What if I live with someone who smokes?

Ask for concrete agreements: that they do not offer you any, that the material is kept out of sight and that, for a few days, they do not smoke in the scene you find most difficult. The other person does not have to take the same break; they do need to stop placing the decision in front of you.

Can my sleep or mood change?

Changes in sleep, irritability, anxiety or appetite may occur, but they vary greatly. Read the guides to sleeping without weed and cannabis withdrawal without using them to diagnose yourself.

If you want support for the first stretch

ALO21 helps you prepare for 21 days without weed, with a useful email each day and a written reply from Albert if you choose to write. Afterward, there are nine days to reflect on what happened. You can use that time with the intention of staying off weed, or as a break to help you decide with more information.

If you would rather read on your own, Abre los ojos, by Albert Miraflor, brings together a personal story and a workbook to explore your relationship with weed. The seven prompts at the end are optional: use one or read without doing them. The book does not include ALO21’s daily support. Its page explains which edition and language you receive in each format.

See how to start with ALO · €49 →

Editorial update: 28 September 2026.
